Internet Marketing Tips

A lot of internet marketing careers begin in a scattered manner. A few articles posted here, an opt-in for a newsletter there, and so on. A lack of good advice has been the death of many internet marketing businesses for one main reason: those people don’t see it as a business.

Whether you’re just planning on doing internet marketing part time or you want to quit your day job within a couple months to focus solely on internet marketing, here is some practical advice, and you’ll notice that this advice can apply to most any business, not just the online sort:

Keep your options open

Don’t tie up all of your resources and money into one project. When you’re first beginning, this can be tough, because you don’t have a lot of resources (advertising money, customer lists, web knowledge, etc.) to draw on. Yes, you should put time and hard work into each internet marketing campaign you run, but don’t expect one campaign to provide for your retirement.

Make a weekly schedule

You wouldn’t show up to a traditional 9 to 5 job at 3 pm and then screw around for a few hours, would you? Of course not. One trap internet marketers fall into is that they work at home and allow other things to get in the way of work. Make a schedule and stick to it. If outside forces mean that you have to cut your workday short by a few hours one day, then make those hours up by the end of the week.

Make a long-term schedule

When you first begin an internet marketing career, it’s hard to know where you’ll be in a few months. However, by making a long-term schedule, you can help guide your career. In this schedule, include new things you want to learn (for example, if your talents run towards web design, then schedule some time to develop your copy writing) in addition to monetary goals, performance benchmarks, etc. Revise this long-term schedule at the beginning of every month to monitor your progress.

Get organized

You’ve got schedules and projects, now you need somewhere to work on them. Create a comfortable work environment and come up with a good filing system on your computer. It will save a lot of time in the future.

Don’t overdo it

You will not get rich overnight and you probably can’t handle running a bunch of different campaigns in a bunch of different markets all at one time. Keep your expectations, and your workload, realistic to avoid burnout.

This is basic internet marketing advice, but that does not mean that it isn’t valuable. It’s great to learn advanced techniques and strategies, but don’t forget the simple stuff or you will find yourself overwhelmed.
