The ‘Schramko’ button improves email opt-in rate by 25%
Posted by James in Conversions, How To, James Schramko
I am a fan of testing things since you can gain huge advantages when you compound the results of a winning test over several years. When you can pull a test result of 10%, 25%. 100% or more than 1000% you will get bigger results much faster!
Background for this idea
There were a number of articles I read indicating that consumers have gone ‘blind’ to the standard ‘we value your privacy’ message which is the bare minimum for email capture page best practice. Some genius marketers have exploited this fact by offering monthly paid ‘trust seal’ and verification services. I decided to test the results of a button that had more prominent trust indicators. Normally I will change a ‘submit’ button text to ‘Click Here For Instant Access” and that has seen conversions improve dramatically. I took this a step further and animated it. My designer started with a yellow (with slight orange shade) button to improve visibility. Next we added and a GREEN (for go) ‘NO Spam’ text with a trusty shield logo. This made the button a bit deeper than the non ‘no spam’ version.
This is what the ‘schramko’ button looks like:
Download The Button
(right click to save as)
Tested over 10,000 impressions
The results over an A:B split test of 5000 serves of this button versus 5000 serves of the same button without the No Spam text showed the ‘No Spam’ version with a 52% conversion versus the 42% without. I hope this test result motivates you enough to try it out on your own site! (That is nearly 25% more).
Permission to use
You have my full permission to use the ‘Schramko’ button and even link to it directly if you please. Be sure to post your own test results using the schramko button. Enjoy and profit from it! Please comment below and also let me know if you would like me to publish some of my many other winning conversion tests…

Pure gold James. 7 figure marketer takes HEAPS of testing and literally gives it to his readers. That’s very like you but very “un-like” so many others.
Thanks

James,
Thanks for the free button. Testing is always a good thing to be doing, but it sure helps when you’ve already run a statistically valid test with favorable results.

Hey James, This is awesome mate! Hey I am trying to get this up on my Aweber account and can’t figure it out. It has where I can paste in the button image but when I saved the image and uploaded to flickr so I could get the image url, it only save the no spam part and not the flash.
Was curious as if you knew what to do? Thanks! I’ll owe ya one.

Why not I’ll test the button! My initial thought of the button when I saw it on your site was it was some kind of advertisement, obviously after reading this post it isn’t… I’ll set up the test and keep you all posted!

A few words about colours for buttons… nature created red mushrooms with white spots and they are poisonous, so red comes forward and can be a warning, an alert. Orange brings our emotions up to the surface, good for somethings where feelings are important, better if a lighter orange. Yellow activates the mental thinking we do, suggesting intelligence! Pink if it’s pale is soothing and calming, but it will slow things down. Bright pink is a more friendly and fun, a lively version of red. Brown is not really a good colour to use on websites as it recedes into the background like the earth. Unless it is a lovely rich warm brown like good chocolate and coffee! But then it will have a touch of red to lift it.

Josh good thing you tested it. How many visits did you test it on in what market against what other button? This would be handy to know. Thank you.

I’m surprsied that the button improves the opt in rate so much. I wonder if it’s due to the size of the button and flashyness of it. I know when I see the word Spam I automatically think Spam in my head whether or not it has the word “No” in front of it.

Hi James,
Great result with this!
It really is amazing how colours can have a powerful impact on when we customers buy or are happy to part with their emails.
I’d be interested to know what customers think ‘spam’ is. Would they think regular list emails were spam?
Thanks
Dan

Hi Dan,
Yes some people will call permission emails spam if they are not framed right or expected. I’m testing new variations now without the spam message and also different framing of the expectation.
For most people they dont want their email sold, rented or pummeled with messages not relevant to what they signed up for.
