How To Start An Internet Business – Part 2

Posted by in Affiliate, Conversions, How To, James Schramko, Traffic

Just as a follow up to my original post ‘How To Start An Internet Business‘ I thought you might like to know the results so far. Often Internet marketing experts teach theory however I like to show practical ‘how to’ stuff to prove this works! Page One Ranking On Google Within days

As you can see from the screen shot we are already ranked 5th a few days after the last post. The proof is right there. The target phrase we chose was certainly achievable and this process can be done over and over again in any market. Video example My youtube video has now been viewed more than 155 times and it is a perfect example of using the techniques we discussed in the last post about starting an Internet Marketing business. What will happen next? My guess is that with the addition of this post with a similar post title and tags we will get a double indented listing in the search results. The way we do this is ‘beef up’ the blog with related posts. Then we link them together with a text link from one to the other. A great plugin to do this automatically is called SEO Smart links. Check it out if you are using WordPress. By adding particular phrases to your blog you can control internal linking. How YOU can apply this stuff These internet marketing techniques are so easy yet powerful you can use them for affiliate promotions. I used this exact technique to get multiple listings for my John Carlton Simple Writing System Bonus campaign. Here are the search engine double listed ranking results I got so far from that: And this technique will often see you placing well in affiliate contests (even with some heavy hitters as competition) Combine my SEO wordpress advice for getting your own Internet Business started with John Carlton sales writing techniques and you should be in the winners seat for getting much better traffic AND conversions! Next actions: Grab the John Carlton mega simple writing system bonus. I have offered an amazing course as a bonus to make the simple writing system a MUST have item! (watch the video here)

Congratulations James. This is very impressive. I also tried john carlton bonus too and you are in positions 1 and 2.

I like the way you have focused on this one product and dominated the search engines plus your blog posts, bonus information and podcasts

Nice one

Hey James,

Awesome results. Once your blog is established, you can rank pretty high for long tail keywords. And in the Internet marketing niche, ranking for these product names is like gold.

What’s up buddy. I was just curious because for the past year I’ve been doing a lot of coaching but I’ve slacked off on my affiliate promotions because I didn’t want to send out a lot of different emails about other people’s products.

Hi James,

I finally found your blog and it was by accident. I actually saw you speak last year at World Internet Summit Australia on the Gold Coast.

I would just like to say your site is amazing, so full of genuine content and helpful advice. I just read this post and your last one. I really like the ‘youtube’ video reading your post. I hadn’t thought of that as a way of attracting traffic. Thank you! :)

I look forward to visiting more on a regular basis. Plus your a fellow Aussie!!

Kind Regards

Jacinta :)

Do you run any blogs or websites that aren’t in the internet marketing business or would you say a majority of the money you earn is from teaching people how to make money online?

James

28. Apr, 2010

I have a lot of income streams outside of teaching people how to make money online ;)

Chris Guthrie

28. Apr, 2010

Any that you will highlight on this blog?

You see my point though right? It’s always important to be wary of people that make money by teaching people how to make money online if it’s not easily clear that they have had successes in other niches as well.

For me I had much better luck when I ventured outside internet marketing as a niche and I’ve since come back to it after being able to quit my job and go full time at it since October.

James

29. Apr, 2010

Chris I think I see your point. You were unlucky in the Internet marketing niche so you are bothered by people who have obvious success?

I have my formula and it works in any niche.

Or perhaps posting comments on my blog provides you fresh leads?

If you cast your eyes to the top right of this blog you will see my seo business. It does not teach people how to make money.

I don’t care to discuss my other businesses in public since invariably some of my very enthusiastic readers will not be able to resist the urge to borrow some ideas. I left full time employment for a life of freedom and the ability to support my family using multiple income streams.

One day perhaps you will grab one of my courses like fast web formula where I teach how to diversify your risk across different niches.

If you want to that it is.

Chris Guthrie

29. Apr, 2010

Hey James,

No that’s not exactly what I’m saying. I’m not “bothered by people who have obvious success” I am wary of people that talk about how to earn money online and they teach people by selling courses that teach people how to make money online.

You can see why right? It’s like a circle. I earn money online because I teach people how to earn money online.

Also no, I don’t post on blogs to generate fresh leads. I post on blogs when I have something to say about the topic, a question for clarification (like now) etc. and it’s not for the link or anything as your comment links are no follow.

To your point about not discussing your other businesses in public that’s fair and I understand that. I was mainly just curious if you do other stuff besides teach people how to make money online.

I get the feeling that you think I’m attacking you and that’s not how I’m trying to come across. That’s the downside of typing comments and not being able to just talk to someone in person.

James

29. Apr, 2010

Hey Chris the only reason I feel you are pointing this to me is that it is posted on my blog and you asked me specifically for details. What other conclusion can I form? When you get to know me you will discover I’m the first person to express my outrage and dissatisfaction where people have no substance. I even posted about this on my other blog: http://www.imfusion.com/internet-marketing/too-much-bullshit/ and: http://www.imfusion.com/internet-marketing/to-speak-or-not-to-speak/

Thing is, I’m not one of the bad guys. I don’t tell a story about living in my car or on a park bench ex-bankrupt sob sob sob…… My story was the opposite. I left a $300k job so I actually know how to run a business and have a pretty good strategic mind. My systems work and I’m proud of it.

There is one aspect you are saying that I have a different perspective on. If you can find someone who can legitimately teach you how to make money online why does it even matter if they have other interests? If you get results by implementing what they teach then that matters – the result. I am pretty certain there are many students of mine who are pleased that I taught them what I know even without needing to know other methods I use to generate income.

(By the way i don’ think there is anything wrong with posting blog comments for leads, it is a legitimate traffic technique if done as a genuine comment. My blog is moving into the keyword arena that your blog competes in).

Ultimately, I do not think there is anything wrong with making money in the make money online market if you have good stuff. Why not be the best and have quality services, products and coaching laden with proof and results. My students in this niche get results.

If you like the case study that I posted for free and you read part one and two and know that the technique works since I proved it right here in real life then you have enough of an idea of what I teach.

Some things I will not teach – for any price. Those things do not get posted on a public blog.

Chris

@Chris I don’t claim to be an expert IM.

Wouldn’t you say that an expert can tell the difference between low quality info and high quality info?

Just curious.

“It’s always important to be wary of people that make money by teaching people how to make money online if it’s not easily clear that they have had successes in other niches as well.”

I guess I should be one of those people to be weary of. I bought a product that taught how to make money online. I liked the product so I promoted it as an affiliate for two years. 6 Months into those two years I got fired from my job but I never had to get another one because I made six figures as an affiliate promoting a “this is how you make money online” product.

At that point I realized I knew more and cared more about the customers buying the product then a lot of the merchants I was promoting did.

So guess what I did? I created what I thought was a better product and my own personal coaching.

I have a few niche sites, but my passion has always been to help people, sell my products and services, and enjoy my freedom.

My best clients have gone into other markets including the “make money/affiliate marketing” niche.

Do you think there’s something wrong with this?

My high school teacher taught me chemistry but he wasn’t a chemist.

When I took my Network Administrator class in college my professor wasn’t a network administrator.

A lot of professional sports coaches NEVER played the sport they’re coaching.

I think the attention should be focused on the product. If the product is good, great.

If the product is bad, BAD. Because for the most part, on the internet, we’re all selling information.

Okay, enough of my ramblings.

Thanks for reading.

@James,

Well it wasn’t my intention to try and drive you to provide specific details when I first commented on your blog. I don’t provide specific URL’s or even markets on my blog, I do provide some general information from time to time though.

I guess we just have differing view points. I believe the fact that you do make money from methods other than just teaching people how to make money is relevant (or perhaps that you did so back in the past). Because if your system is just designed to get people to build up their own websites and lists to sell more internet marketing products than isn’t that a problem?

But if on the flip side you teach people how to drive traffic etc. so that they can earn money from their blog about purses than that seems more legit in my opinion.

Side note: Yah, the make money online keywords are fairly saturated. Have you tried going after “make money online” yet? It’s the highest traffic term of the bunch of course but pretty tough to crack (I haven’t even bothered)

James

29. Apr, 2010

Page one for make money online looks totally doable. I have better rankings (double the competition) in other niches.

Thanks for being more specific. When you asked me if I care to ‘highlight’ I took that to mean you wanted specifics.
You may be interested to know that the majority of my students apply my methods outside the IM niche.

Example: I teach students how to be paid by creating businesses that help local businesses get an online advantage and many of my non IM clients apply the fast web formula to an existing service or online/offline business to leverage it and dominate online.

Chris Guthrie

29. Apr, 2010

Ok great I think we kinda cleared that up a bit lol. I really didn’t meant to start an argument / cause problems in the comment section on your blog (in fact if you’d like to just feel free to remove the comments).

Yes the fact that your students apply the tactics to other markets completely unrelated to IM is good to hear.

Best of luck on ranking for “make money online” though. I’m not targeting that one so have at it :) If you’re successful I will have to give you a virtual high five.

Katie

29. Apr, 2010

the IM niche is a little bit more competitive online than the selling purses niche…

Great keyword choice lets all chase it for the next 100 years and then wonder why we aren’t making money online.

James

29. Apr, 2010

I did just register a make money online domain so I’ll give it a crack later. Comments are the best part of a blog – real discussion. Chances are others are sitting back wondering if all IM’ers are full of shit ;)

James is very lucky, he has managed to find something he is really passionate about and make a living out of it…more so he is able share is knowledge with others so they too can benefit from his experience. I was discussing this with other well know IM’s the other day and we all agreed that James is one of the real genuine guys in the business…..keep giving James….all your students really appreciate it.

Nice comment battle going on here, I can feel the tension, lol.

James, I just wanted to say thanks for being a great mentor, I’ve been following you for about a year now, and the stuff I’ve learnt from you has enabled me to make my first sales online as an affilliate. And the strategies that you and Kyle Tully teach about earning money as an Internet Marketing Consultant are gold!! p.s. Just wondering how you get links to your individual posts?

Hi James, congratulation on your success! I listened to the interview Jaro Starak made with you, it was good stuff!

If I’m not mistaken, you didn’t start in the ”how to make money” but promoting a website creation software! Probably something Chris would like to know ;)

Anyway, I’ll invest in your seo partner service starting tomorrow to help me rank for my niche (which has nothing to do with internet marketing).

My site is making sales….but I need more traffic! I’m excited!! :)

James

06. May, 2010

Thanks Tony, yes that niche and then others outside of make money. In fact I am still in other markets as well. I look forward to helping you get more traffic!

Sorry to arrive after the dust has settled but for Chris’ benefit I’ve known James since before he used to be doing it tough on $300K a year!

A couple of times I have seen James share one example of the many niches that he has had great success in and an eager course attendee immediately started competing directly with James, using James’ techniques to saturate a niche that James had discovered and developed himself.

I also know of other internet marketers who have shamelessly ripped off his research and results and label them as their own!

There are other examples of people ripping him off and each time I see James’ frustration that people aren’t as ethical as he is and generously assumes that everyone is. He also actually feels sorry for them because he realises that they have crippled their own chances of success by doing the wrong thing.

I attend James’ seminars here in Sydney and he is still incredibly generous with his knowledge and skills, even after being burnt a few times as in the example above. Understandably, though, he shares his best internet marketing secrets with paying customers.

When Gandhi was a lawyer he decided to refuse to represent clients who HE didn’t believe were innocent. His business went through the roof because of his ethical reputation (and the weight it inevitably carried with juries). When I read that about Gandhi last year, it reminded me of James.

To approximately quote James: “unethical behaviour is not a sustainable business model!”

I’ve seen James helped hundreds of people (including me and several of my friends and family that I’ve referred to him) make money online in their own chosen niches. Even when his clients discover great niches and ask him for advice, he does not use their ideas.

Chris, I hope that your internet marketing continues to succeed to the point that you are tempted to travel just to keep your bank account from getting too big and we can welcome you to one of James’ seminars and you can see the guy for yourself. He’s the real deal.

Dane

More fantastic content. Someone arranged for me to have a chat to James late last year & I am very grateful I did.
He has been an inspiration to me, in terms of what is possible. But more importantly he has taken the time to go out of his way over & over again to assist me with building a real business helping local small business owners, along with other models we are working on.
The information he provides is always full of substance, he gets rid of the stuff you don’t need & provides info that provides massive value.
I am very grateful & excited with what the future holds now, as I have started getting some very happy & satisfied clients on board, thanks to the information & guidance James has been providing me. James has a real passion to help people that want to be helped, & since meeting James have decluttered my inbox with all the so called experts, & now just listen to the info James provides, because the reality is, they provide me with results, simple as that.
Perhaps if someone like Chris was actually involved in James seminar, he would see the authenticity of the guy, like Sean says, he is the real deal, with the best intentions.

Hi James,

I went to your Wealth from Marketing seminar yesterday. I must say that I was really inspired.

This post serves as a good compliment to your talk.

By the way, I asked you a “Chinese Takeaway” question towards the end, do you remember? Can expand your answer a little bit please? Maybe you could provide me a few links? I suppose it’s a general topic that you have blogged about before. Can you offer some more pieces of advice?

Just thought you might be interested to know, having spoken with a few other participants, you are by far the most liked speakers at the event. :)

Hi Benson,

if you have a website built in WordPress for your store and create a Facebook page for it as well you should be able to crank up some real local domination. I hope you are on board the offer I made since the material in those courses will do everything you need.

hey James i was at your seminar in London, it was great!
you talked about hiring people from the far east to do my websites for cheap, that very very interesting.
so what you say is, i give them an idea, and they write articles, build websites, market it for me, and i take the money ?? if so, how do i get to these people?
and why do they do it for cheap when then can make more by doing it them self, is it just the way things are ?
please, if you can share your knowledge on the subject it will be nice(:
Tnx!!
