I sort like concept 1 myself. I would like to see the book graphic from the other concepts though.

Hey J,
#1 Hands down!
It’s more personal and people are more receptive to an open personality…but you know that, lol
I read your Double Digit CTR ebook a while back and it helped me with my PPC campaigns, so I visit ur blog from time to time, because I know there’s gonna be some good info posted.
Talk to you lata!

Thanks Q,
I have that version too! Good pickup. I’ll note that the curvy ezine cover is more appealing.
Appreciate the comment.

Hi James,
I like the look of the header pics on concept 1 but I prefer the opt in on concept 4,
hope this helps.

I like a combination of concepts 1 and 5.
Graphics in concept 1 makes a website more appealing. The layout in concept 5 is the most appealing and professional looking.

#2 is my choice.
I’m always drawn back to Internet Marketing Speed because it’s about VALUE with a good dose of humor and tough love thrown in. The information here motivates people to DO instead of simply PLAN, and informs them enough so they can take action NOW without going crazy in the process.

Hi James,
I like the Concept #1.
First, I like the pictures at the top. It personalizes the blog more. Concepts 1,2 & 3 have the same basic layout which is good. I like the looks of the sidebar and main panel. Concepts 2 & 3 are a little plain.
Concept 5 is my second choice. I like the top banner balanced by the bottom features. I can’t tell whether the Concept 1 has that bottom. If you are going to put a lot of pictures in the right sidebar, you may not need the pictures across the top as you have in Concept 1. In that case the solid banner keeps it from being too busy.
Good luck, Pat

Yes – good points about personal. I was interested to see if people care about me of just the content or both!

Hi James,
Honestly, I prefer #2. I’m online a lot, as you are, and I’ve really come to prefer clean layouts over anything else.
Graphics can be so distracting, especially NICE graphics. It’s like “yeah, the graphics/layout looks great, but it looks so great that it’s distracting me from the content that I need to read.”
I’m old school. I vote for a clean, white background and light colors all the way.
My two cents.

I like concept #5. The color blocks clearly and cleanly differentiates the header with advertisement from the navigation links from the post.
Concept #1 is too busy at the top. Concepts #2, #3 and #4 are too plain and washed out.
Go for #5.

Thanks Steven,
Yes I much prefer the opt-in (and the design) of Concept 4.
I may be able to blend features that people like into the final concepts.

Design 5.
Strong, crisp, clean, bold and authentic. The design is more visually striking and I feel, is also congruent with James nature as a giving, straight-shooting guy.
But I do think the curved cover looks better as well.

I like concept No.1 WAY more than all the rest. (for my blog). I could use it to put photos in, maybe even changing them now and then.
But…..
I think you should use concept No.2 because it looks worthy of your professional blog. Maybe you could use the optin box from concept No.4?
I have recently unsubscribed from many dozens of email lists. For some reason, you and your emails strike me as being honest, minimal and valuable (to me).
I will never unsubscribe from your email.
UNLESS, you start using “GO GO GO!!” in your subject.
Rob….
PS…. don’t chuck No.1 away, I’ll have it….

My vote is for template number one
* The photos of you on the beach and in the weightlessness flight build a sense of rapport with viewers
* The call to action for the report download is appealing

James, I really like concept #5. The blue color is great. Did you know that “blue” is the most popular color in the world?
I like the “professional” look of the site. It doesn’t look like your kid brother did it in the garage!

James,
Definitely Concept #1. I look for your blog to help identify key areas and provide focus that helps me build an internet business.
Concept #1 helps me feel a deeper connection with you through the pictures. I like that they are snapshots, and not just banner graphics. Again, it enhances the feel of the site providing a glimpse into your world, and a “focus” on an internet marketers lifestyle. I just don’t get the immediate connection with the other layouts.
An extra feature would be changing up the snapshots when appropriate (new events, etc. that may also relate to the latest posts).
Keep up the great work.
p.s. I’ll be in San Diego for Mass Control and look forward to meeting you in person.
Thanks, Gary

Hi James,
I like Concept 1 best because of the header; which gives it substance, good looks and draws the eye.
I enjoy reading your blog because I get good value for my time investment. There is limited time available to read and I like to read best of breed stuff – your blog is one of the few on my regular reading list.
Keep up the good work.

Hey James
You know my thoughts aren’t gonna be anything close to normal! hehe
I like the layout and header of number 1, the background of number 5 and the book offer of number 2 – tho I’m sure none of that is actually helpful!
If I could only choose one it’d def be number one – I really like the pics (tho I think you need a bit of pink in there LOL) – they are way more personal – feels like a real person is at the helm.

Hi James,
Concept 5 is by far the best.
The dark header implies strength and solidity, while blue is a cool and relaxing colour but also a colour one associates with financial transactions. The lighter body is a nice contrast and easy on the eye.
I like reading your blog because you are honest, trustworthy, and you over-deliver on info.
Well done.

Hi James,
I like number 1, i think that the photos’s make it warmer and friendlier as wellshowing that this is who you are.
Second choice if you were wanting to shy away from the photos i like number 5, but just a different graphic for the book.

It POP’s off the page. It’s more visually appealing. It’s less busy, easier to read, so more people will read it. Therefore more people will follow and buy products and you’ll make more money…. Nuff said!

Hi James,
Overall i would say concept #1 is the best, it has the personal touch, but it will be better if the book cover is the ‘curvy’ one, and blend with the opt-in at concept #4.
I come to know about your blog through warrior forum and you always provide ‘true’ review and real-world knowledge to your list, i seldom see internet marketer ‘stopping’ people to buy overhyped and useless product, which you did, and that’s the point which you’re very different from others.
Hope this helps!

Hey, James,
Concept 4 & 5 look different from others.
1. General design: Since concept 1 to 3 look quite similar to other existing websites in the Internet, it can’t be figurative to ordinary users.
2. User-centered aspect: concept 1 to 3 have similar widgets and gadgets to current social networking sites. Nothing special.
3. Screen impact: Still concept-5 looks professional more than the others, concept-4 can emphasize what you wanna tell to visitors which might be your prospective clients or friends.
Sum: My suggestion is using concept-4 contents and visual materials with a background of concept-5.
Hope this helps.

Hi James
Well, for me it was a choice between Concepts, 1, 2 and 5. I particulary noticed the emphasis on the word “Speed” in most of the concepts. However, in my humble opinion the three words “Internet Marketing Speed” together have equal importance and it came down to a choice between No: 1 and No: 5.
My final choice was Concept No:5 It’s my favourite.
However, there’s one proviso. If Concept No 5 could have the photos at the top as in Concept 1 that would, in my opinion, make it even better, particularly if they could be changed from time to time and be clickable to find out more information.
As to why I visit your blog on a fairly regular basis it’s because of a number of reasons, but particularly the interviews you do. By listening you can pick up a lot of useful tips that can be used in your own marketing. For example, the interview with Michael Dunlop was great as was the one today with Kerry Finch.
In addition, I always read your product reviews – not that I can afford many of them – but again there’s always good information along with your regular tips and giveaways.
Visitors to your blog will find a wealth of information no matter what Concept you finally decide on !

I enjoy concept one cause it has your picture which brands you. He could make the picture a bit less garish. also he should put the image of your book from concept 2, 3 or 4 as that is how you have branded it for some time. But perhaps a new look for your older product is in order, my only fear is that long time folks might think it is new and then sub in and purchase again…I am sure I am not the only one here who has purchased an ebook more than once in error.
Hope that was helpful.

Concept 1 because it doesn’t look like a sales letter but rather like something I’d enjoy reading. More personal (it’s the photos that do it)
Enjoy reading blog because I get so envious. Hate reading it really. But makes me want it more (own success).

Hi James,
I really like #5. The header from #1 is pretty cool but I do like 5 the best. I like the layout with the blog on the left with the side bar on the right for ads and the footer on the bottom for more ads. Great!
Bob Schaffer
21. Mar, 2009
I really like Concept 5 the best. First of all I don’t like to have to stretch myeyeballs to try and read the totle of an ebook that is almost lying flat. I like the front cover in #5 looking straight at me, which makes it much easier to read at first glance. Secondly, the entire format of #5 is very easy to follow, with each side very easy to follow from top to bottom. Thw “categories” on the right hand side follow very well after the upper portion.
This design is, to me, the easiest on the eyes, and the best organized layout. Great design in my opinion.

James, you are devious in an obvious sort of way. ‘The choice is no choice’ (so to speak): the first template is clearly, ‘above and away’ the only possible template because of the irrefutably irresistible ‘personalisation’ factor in the header snapshots PLUS the report image to the right. The remaining microscopic variations in the ‘layout’ options are but slight shifts in the deck-chairs on the good ship Schramko as it prepares to dock at its next internet-funded resort holiday with dogs & kids in equal number. Not even sure why you feel you need another blog template at all, because you clearly do not NEED another template given how well things are working for you. It is just an ‘attention-getting device’ — and it has worked again! Congratulations on your success. I defy you to use any other template but #1. Of course, you should really be ‘testing and tracking’ all 5 of them anyway, eh?

Awesome comments!
I’m just applying stuff I learnt from Craig Ballantyne, Michael Dunlop and Tim Schmidt (my recent interview victims).
They are experts on blogging, contest marketing and association tribal marketing. These are the wonderful people I meet whilst adventuring overseas. The interviews of each are available on this blog for free.
Seriously, I am super interested in what my readers want because I am here to serve them, not me. I think that’s the core to this “blogging” thing
I’ve got some awesome interviews coming up as well with Dean Hunt – the Buzz Blogger (he will teach me how to become more interesting), and James Dyson – the Designer. He will be going through these comments with me helping me select a final concept.
I am surprised already at the feedback. I want to deliver what people want – after all, it makes sense.

Hi James,
I would definitely choose concept 1. I think by having the top banner with your picture and your hobbies in it is very important. It allows people to connect with you and shows what type of person you are. Since you are showing people how to be successful on the Internet I think it will make people feel like, soon they will be able to have adventures like you. People want to see who they are buying and learning from now a days.
I like the right side ad but I think if you added the red button like in concept 4 it would look more appealing.

I’m with Patricia on this and Concept 1 is definitely the way to go. The photos on this option are what makes it stand out! The others just look boring in comparison (to me at least). But of course we are all individuals and we all like different things, so it will very interesting to see what gets voted top.

Hi James
My preference is for Concept No 1.
The use of photographs, including personal ones – not just business related ones – appeals to me. It makes me feel like I “know” the person a little better and that they are a real person. That photo of you with your laptop is a great photo – keep using it!
I like the layout/balance of #1 the best too. The style/colour/size of the headings etc appeals to me too. They get my attention without being gawdy.
I visited your site today for the first time. I’m very impressed with the information you have – not that I was surprised by that at all! I was at the World Internet Summit last week at the Gold Coast and wrote down your website address then. I met you briefly afterwards.
I was very impressed with your presentation right from the start, hence, I did not hesitate to visit your site today.
I look forward to working my way through everything you have made available here on your site!
I hope my comments help you a little in making your decision.

#1
as a COMPLETE newbie – I thought blogs are people commenting in community.
This is the only one that shows us a picture of you.
So the picture of you makes it less ‘faceless’ and more trusting. Which actually may be key if you are attracting more newbies into your business.
You could even change some pictures of you with your key team members or with your best students.

Hi James,
Without a doubt No 1 !!!
You’re trying to stimulate people so showing people and people oriented things is the must have bait to excite them to read on and not click off.
The others just have no visual zing.

I vote for number 1 with combination of number 4 optin design. 2 column is better view for visitors and visitors won’t have to choose too many options. However, it will be good to put the Concept 5 background color for the combination which makes the reading part stand out and easier for visitors to focus. The lower 3 part widgets are great too which can let users know what’s happening in your site like comments, recent posts…It will be good to have the post count in the categories eg: affiliate marketing(12), ppc(5)…
I like to come back for the blog because of your own experiment of products and your own site results. That help me to learn a lot! Another reason is that I can participate in your site not just one way communication.

Hi James,
For me #1 is a “No Brainer” I was so excited to meet you in person at the recent World Internet Summit 2009 on the Gold Coast – Australia. So to put a personal touch on your blog is more appealing. It’s got great content with a human touch as well, and after having also met you live basically means I’ll be checking your blog way into the future. Regards Albert

None of them until you take that bloody book picture out of the top right corner.
Test it without – and you will see it sucks. The rest of each design is so good and unusually refined that you dont need to copy all the other blood sucking gurus by copying that element and looking like a used car salesman. You are not. Don’t follow/copy the other schmucks!!

Although concept #1 is very good ( the only reason why it is is because of the rolling pics)
I would suggest you go with concept 5 which is mor professional than any other concept and you should integrate the rolling pics from Concept #1.
My Choice is Concept #5 with integration of pics from Concept #1

G’day James,
Everyone will see something different, but for me it’s really a no-brainer….
A combination of 1 and 4.
Your quality content has always spoken for itself which is what keeps us coming back, but number 1 helps bring YOU to life.
And this is great for both your personal branding and in bringing YOU closer to your ‘tribe’ (us!
) )
And on a much more under the radar level, a couple of the pics also further cement your credibility/associations by being linked to Yanik Silver and his Maverick Business Adventures group.
Some of us will know what that’s about….and it just helps inspire us on to join you guys on a couple of these great trips. (A few days on Necker Island with the MBA gang and Richard Branson in May would be fabulous for starters!
) )
Meanwhile number 4′s opt-in opportunity makes things better for you to capture people’s details. (I missed the much more subtle ‘invite’ option in number 1).
Look forward to seeing the final result whichever way you go.
Cheers,
Ivan

I like free, informative, valuable ebook covers! I mean not that cover but the content. Of course if you have a professional, convincing free ebook covers, most likely people want it.
Most of the people who don’t like it is because they get too bad, crap ebooks. But if you can show them your great ebook with great value, you will have more and more word of mouth from others and bam.. tons of subscribers!

Well,
I am going to go against the flow here but I will give my reasons.
No 3 is my pick with the opt in of number 4
Reason 1: The photos in concept 1 don’t do anything for me (I love you James! Even tho I barely know you) but I come to the site for the absolutely awesome information and unless the images are clever and relevant to the article I find them distracting. And ultimately I think, the purpose of images is to encourage the visitor to stay and respond isn’t it? I mean ‘can I buy you and bring you home?’ then leave them there!
Reason 2: I have been to your other sites as well and the colour blue in Number 3 is identical. I think “ Ahhh… this looks like James’ site I must be in the right place.” I think they call this consistent look and feel don’t they?
In example 1 and 2 the blue screams ‘Microsoft Windows-blue – abort!! Abort!!’
Reason 3: The opt- in example 4 is COMPELLING. I knew it was a mock up and I STILL CLICKED THE DARN THING!!! I am lazy and honest about it. If I can type my e-mail and click ‘download this outrageously good offer now’ without leaving the page- I’m yours! It’s almost embarrassing that I am that easy! But send me to another page – and you’ve lost me; I probably won’t bother with that extra click.
So overall I go for fresh and clean – always looks good!
(Please hold me to this when I build my website!)

Hi James,
Concept #5 looks really good. The design is clean and it fits with the personality you give your blog as well as the design of your report.
It has an attention getting look which works well with the content you supply. You’re in depth conversations and concise reviews are attractive and worth returning for.
It’ll be interesting to see which design you pick.

I worked as a graphic designer and illustrator in the USA and Aus for many years. I also worked as an animation background painter for both Warner and Disney for a total of seven years in the USA, all before the computer revolution took over, so everything was painted and designed by hand.
To me, design number ONE is by far the cleanest read. The floating, staggered photos give the layout a feeling of friendliness and trust.
When I think of James Schramko, I think of the photo located farthest to the left, and I think of this photo as one of two brand “Schramko” photos. (The second photo that I see as a brand photo is not in this series, but is the one where James is wearing dark shades producing the “Cool Schramko” look.
The book cover itself in number ONE is also the easiest to read. The angle of the other books, although interesting to look at because of the foreshortening and perspective, do not produce the necessary instant read. (If you wanted to produce a quick graphic read of the headline with a book shot in perspective, perhaps you could render the book in perspective, but not at such an acute angle.) The type in layout number ONE, because it is “flat on” gives a quick and instant billboard-like read…. readability at a glance.
In my humble opinion, design number ONE exhibits the essence of any successful advertising graphic design, a quick and easy read…at a glance!
In my humble opinion, from all of the choices given above, layout number ONE is far superior to any of the others.

James, I really liked #1 the best. It seems to have a lighter tone and is definitely more personal. I also like the different color shade on the border.
Maybe incorporate the bottom of the #5 layout, that is a nice touch and a professional look.
The wavy book icon looks better too, however I’d keep the “Click Here to Download” button that is on #1.
Hope this helps!

The reason I will always read this blog (and recommend it to my list) is because James is always impartial, fair and honest. No hype, fluff or slippery marketing tactics here; only useful advice (and amazing content) that can be implemented immediately by both “newbies “ & “gurus” alike. James helps me to believe that I will make it in this game too, as long as I am always true to myself and have a genuine desire to help others to succeed.
The theme I prefer is concept 1 (because personal & face pics of the blogger, and not just their logo, builds instant credibility). I would add the Opt-in box and eBook cover from Option 4 but I would change the “SEND MY FREE REPORT NOW” button to orange (FEB500) because red screams WARNING. See split testing results http://drivingtraffic.com/magic-buy-button/
An orange button here would also match your e-cover and RSS button to give the page a more consistent visual color scheme of blue and orange.

From a copywriter’s view, your main objective is to grab the reader with the headline, and continue on with copy that the reader just has to read. You also want him to take action, either order a report, buy a product, etc. As important you want his contact info. With all that, #4 does the job, and my second choice would be #5. Graphics, as in #1 looks pretty, but pretty does not accomplish what you set out to do.

Hi James,
Because so many things nowadays conspire to usurp vertical screen space: the widescreen aspect ratio, toolbars, browser tabs, banner ads, top navigation, header images and branding, status bars etc, I am grateful for sites that respect my vertical screen space. With most sites and common browser setups, a typical notebook computer often has less than three useful inches above the fold. That seems ridiculous to me.
Cheers,
Steve

Jim……are you sure you even want to broach all of this?
Not to be a smart ass, but you sell a great product pertaining to XsitePro, you know, the Cheat Sheet….not a WordPress cheat sheet. OK, if that’s what you want.
This is simple for me….#5 with #4′s book offer….Why you ask? Because the of the contrast. Did you know 96% of all humans have contrasting opinions and that a visual of those contrast would serve to reinforce an opinion no one pays any attention to normally, thusly giving the warm and fuzzies to some obscure reader that would otherwise would have passed by without impact under normal conditions. Didn’t think of that did you?
BTW…..how’d it go in Washington DC?
All the best,
Jack

No rules about a second post are there! I am not only desperate for that DVD but I am getting heaps out of reading these posts and debates, thank you all (The result of another brilliant idea of James to show us that the customers can actually give you the product if you just dare to ask them!)
Let me add a possible solution to the above comment by Miri re having to leave the page and to go to a second page for the opt-in squeeze. Check out this FREE WordPress opt-in at http://www.fasterinternetmarketing.com/2008/07/building-an-opt-in-list-for-wordpress/
What this one allows you to do James is not only put the squeeze on your blog front page but if they click on your ecover image a small box jumps out that could contain your video and all of the same copy that is now on your second (squeeze) page. Although not technically a choice of blog concepts I hope this solution helps to optimize your blog and increase your op-tin rate. It might be worth testing.

I like the family style pictures, also something “professional like” (like office/computers?) could make good impression.

You have done well James implementing the contest marketing. Hope you have extra time to read all these replies and now you get to see how many people are actually paying attention to you. I like banner 1 with template 5 and I also like call to action 1 with template 5. Template 5 is warm with the blue around it and quite defined. I like the pics in 1 makes it far more personable. I like to see who I am listening to. I think that is why Frank Kern does so well he shows him self in natural surroundings all the time which makes you feel chummy to him. Pictures help you do that. I would like to see the call to action 1 in template 5 because I think it needs that little splash of yellow, would make it stand out a lot more then just all blue. I do like the book standing up instead of lying down. In template 5 I would like to see the Reviews, Products, About etc with some kind of color to them. They get lost because of the banner above. Good luck deciphering the best.

HI James
I prefer Number 1 for the following reasons:
1. The pics at the top make it more personal, like there is a real person behind the information and the offers.
2. The call to action is very clear.
3. I like the arrows pointing the way to the offer and I also prefer the book graphic.
4. It is clean and fresh and very well laid out.
5. The pics at the top give the page a bit more colour and add to the overall inviting look of the page.
6. Number 1 is overall much brighter and inviting.
My only suggestion if I may would be to shift the Recommended Boxes down a bit because when they have pics in them it will not detract from the pics at the top and make the page look too busy.
My second choice would be 5 as it is completely different from the others and I do not like 2,3 as much and especially do not like 4.
Thanks for the great info keep it coming.
Blessings Jenny

I think any of the concepts would be successful but am particularly drawn to concept 2. The first thing you see on the page is where you have landed and then the menu options. Without any further ado you get what you came for, the great content. Any resources you need are on the right, but that is true for all the concepts.
Pictures are nice, but I find myself not really looking at them unless they are part of the content of a site, especially in a blog.
Can’t wait to see which you choose, James. No matter which it is, I will be back often.

As a designer I always look for simplicity and impact. The heading in Concept 1 has too many elements, so it’s too busy. The rest of 1 is great.
I would like to see a combination of 1 and 5. Combining the photos on Concept 1 (for the personal touch) with the solid colour in Concept 5 (for strength) and place the navigation at the top or below the photos. The others 2, 3, and 4 are too plain. They say that ugly sells, maybe in some areas, but I believe a good design will always support good information like yours James.
I also like the suggestion to change the photos now and then, maybe one at a time one photo at a time, an automatic rotation.
Recently, I saw your presentation at the World Internet Summit on the Gold Coast and your simple layout and great selection of photos won my attention over all the others. It made a statement about you. Your blog will do the same.
Keep it simple.
Cheers

Hi James
Love No. 5
The surrounding varied blue frame draws the eye into the text. I find those with too much white space makes the eyes wander and can be a bit glaring. It would be nice if you could combine the photos from No.1 in there somewhere as well.
Also agree with Jack about No 4′s book offer put on No.5. Agree with Darren about changing it to orange. In split tests done by Ryan Deiss and Perry Belcher the orange buttons far outperformed all others for optins.
Another of my litle rants James as I already like your blog as it stands too !

Hi James
Number 1 – no question… Somebody else noted that Graphics can be distracting and maybe they do detract from a pure ‘clean lines’ design… but hey, anyone can come up with an impersonal clean lines design. As you note in your XSP Cheatsheet (Page 109) “Trust and Transparency are a big currency in Online marketing” and this is the only option that includes YOU!
Number 4 looks like the next most likely to be by a real person and number 5 looks the most ‘corporate’ and, to me, off-putting.
It’s you that people know and buy into James… Go for a James based design!!

You guys and gals are great!!!
Some top ideas here (and I am sure many of you can benefit from the information just in these comments).
When Dyson the designer gets back from Skiing I will be asking him to blend the common requests here.
I love that YOU are helping me create a blog that will deliver what you want.
Perhaps I just add the pictures into the About section – Most people are repeat visits to this blog.
Also it sounds like the red on number 4 should be orange.
And YES I am removing the need to click through or add a name. Just email for the opt-in for the new blog. This should lift conversions.
There is something else I am keeping a surprise too that will really add to the opt-in offer. I will be giving away more than just my free report. You need to wait for that one! It’s big.
Keep the comments going. I am really enjoying the passion and humor as well!
Thank you !
Someone will be winning a DVD from the workshop that people have paid $2k to attend. (And it is worth more than that!!).

The first one is best. Even if the template used fewer pictures and just had the one of you with your laptop on the beach.
Isn’t that what everyone’s striving for – working from the beach part time via laptop!
Granted not everyone should have a picture of themselves on their sites, but you come across as genuine and sincerely helpful and for you and your site, the picture is a huge plus in your favor.
Best of luck with the new layout – whichever you choose.

It’s all about time. What will keep the web surfer on your page 3 seconds longer, 10 seconds longer, 30 seconds longer?
Visual appeal has to grab the web surfers attention and hold it long enough for them to see an element of content that will keep them on the site long enough for them to take the “click” finger off the mouse button.
Option 1 is good, but adding the border color (blue side panels only) of five makes it better.
There you have it. You can end the contest now and send me the prize.
All the Best James!

James,
Given the crowd you run with and the ‘yet to be seen’ banner ads these ‘gurus’ will want to expose to your readers, I would suggest you put concept #2 in the top running position for these reasons;
1) It’s not a dramatic departure from your current theme which is a clean, professional and fast loading metaphor
2)As best I can tell, the Arb/Conspiracy 2) Detective 3) XXX banners ads will show better with the white background as opposed to the other themes you have on your target list.

Hi James,
Go with #1 because it is very clean and has your picture to boot. People coming to your blog for the first time should be able to tie a face to your name; and moreover, to the quality contents that you provide on the blog.
The quality content you constantly provide on the blog keeps me coming back!

James, I like Concept 1 the best. The personal images catch everybody’s attention and lead them from left to right to the image of your free sign-up report link. Clicking there is the natural first action. (Watch out for that banner at the top, though. For first-time visitors, it should lead to your own specific desperate buyer product, so you’ll get a sale and sign-up.)
Why do I read your blog?
1. You provide 500% more value than ego. Because you’ve already built professional and personal success offline, you can do this.
2. You offer case studies to help people see themselves doing what you’ve already done (or avoid what doesn’t work). By sharing your results, you gain trust, gratitude, and loyalty. Guess whose affiliate link I click first? Guess whose products I recommend?
3. You’ve paid to learn from the top mentors, so your subscribers don’t have to do the same at the beginning of their own business path. You continue experimenting and testing, using what you’ve learned.
4. Your products contain some of the latest successful strategies, but they cost one-tenth of the major gurus products. You send subscribers and customers down the insider path instead of throwing them in the me-too heap of online marketers fighting over pennies a day.
5. You respond to emails. I still can’t believe it.
Cheers,
Mary

Hi James,
As a former Interior Designer (this may not be relevant except for User Experience thru aesthetics/color combination) and IT corporate person, my picks would be a combination of 1 and 5.
1 – is appealing and personal with the pictures blending the cool (no pun intended) side of blues with bits of color, also new design recommended every 2 years on a website.
Mimi
21. Mar, 2009
oops, hit the enter key to soon.
5 – very new and different from what you are currently using. Again, the design with color is very easy and appealing, information is easily found and the white on cool blues is calming and easy on the eyes to read.
Sorry to be so technical but 5 would definitely be my choice.
Best Wishes always,

I am a visual person. When I see nothing but words on a page it does not get my attention as easy. From the feed back you are getting it looks like there are some good ideas in each choice. A picture is worth a thousand words. Have you heard that somewhere before.
#5 with the pictures from #1 get my vote!

Hi James,
As a concept #1 with the photos is by far the best. Our eyes are naturally drawn to human faces and its your blog so it must have your photo for branding yourself. And yes I like the idea of changing these photos from time to time, particularly the “what I’m doing” photos.
I like the stronger blog title in #5. With the other concepts on white background the title gets lost.
I also like the stronger optin in #4. Would be interesting to split test this part of the new blog and let us know the results.
Steve
21. Mar, 2009
No Question About it- #1 easily.
The reasons- people love putting a face to a name and it builds trust. People would rather deal with a real person than a company.
I also think the idea of no opt in box for the free report might convert better even though they’ll have to opt in on a separate page. Split testing would be interesting.
Everything else looks clean and good. Great job!

I like #4 because it’s easier on the eyes. I find too many things on a blog cause me to be overly distracted and I can’t focus on what I’m there for. #4 is extremely easy to navigate and isn’t nearly so distracting as the others.
I also really like that the social media contact buttons are so clearly defined and easy to use.

Nr 1 is the most Personal and will do the job, also the little images above the page give it an extra dimention.
The white background is good for visibility.
nr 5 is what you usually see in the intermet marketig niche but is a bit dated and lacks personality.

Sorry, this is lengthy. But here is my $0.02 worth… coming from someone who is easily visually distracted and likes web pages with focus.
#1 – I like clean, simple pages. This is too busy with the pics. Your personality and “who you are” should come through in your writing. If you want personal, there is always the ABOUT and the occasional blog post about Baja, etc (maybe under CATEGORY of FUN). When I see pictures headlining *every* page like that my first thought is they border on braggadocio “my exotic vacation”, “my expensive car”, “look who I’m hanging out with”, etc (which is okay for the ABOUT page and the FUN posts but not headlining every page.) A picture of you is okay to establish the “human being” factor. Otherwise it should be ALL about the reader – each and every nuance should ADD VALUE TO THEM! Now if this was strictly a “personal” blog… well, I’ll get off my soapbox now…
#2 – really like the right sidebar of this one the best, hands down. And the rest of the page is very good.
#3 – isn’t bad but I’m not a big fan of having a menu bar at the very top of page, visually prefer it under the top main header.
#4 – my least favorite of them all – just doesn’t flow, the red button on the right is too “in your face” compared to the rest of the page. The one redeeming value of this one is that I can enter my email address in there and click rather than clicking to a whole ‘nother page.
#5 – I like the little bit darker framing of the page, it helps the eyes to focus, in on the text easier, looks more business-like. Sometimes all white or too light of a frame and the text can get lost in the white expanse, especially on a widescreen. I don’t like the right sidebar, it doesn’t flow well. And didn’t like the page footer (Recent Posts, Recent comments, etc) I’d just have the Recent Posts in the right sidebar. Simply end the bottom of the page with the dark copyright notice footer.
So if I had to pick my overall favorite JUST THE WAY THEY ARE, I’d say #2.
BUT, #2 is really my #2 pick. My #1 pick would be a hybrid of:
#5 minus the “Recent Posts”, “Recent comments” and “Text Widget” footer
and with the right sidebar from #2 modified with the email box of #4 without the arrow and with a blue “Send my free report now” button.
(sorry I tend to be anal perfectionist on these things…)
p.s. Are these custom one-off designs or based on Affiliate Theme?
p.p.s. How about a post on WordPress vs Static HTML pages? Pros & cons, advantages/disadvantages of each. I bought XsitePro2 and cheatsheet based on your advice and have created several sites so far. But thinking about switching all future sites to WordPress.

Hi, James,
I like #3 the best with #4 opt-in.
I like the links across the top of #3.
I like the simplicity of #3.
I like the Recent posts, etc. on the side bar in #3 instead of at the bottom, as in #5.
I think the pictures at the top of #1 are distracting. Putting them in the About section is a good idea.
In general, I like your blog because of the high quality, honest, impartial reviews.

Concept #1 stands our for me. I really like the personal touch and I always like to know a little about the person I am dealing with. I also like the insight into what we too can have if we are serious about this business….it is the dream that will draw us in and keep us motivated to do the work and keep going when things get tough!

21. Mar, 2009
Hi James,
I prefer version #1 too. I like it that the menu strip is at the very top of the page – if I need it it’s easy to find but if I don’t it doesn’t clutter up my “eye space”.
The shading in the left and right borders makes this stand out better than #3 but #5 is too … heavy?
I read you blog because I am now convinced of the need for mentors in my life – people who really walk the walk in the area I wish to develop. You and your blog qualify in spades and you give great value.
Now that I have discovered you (through WIS) I know that I will continue to follow this blog and your member’s forum (yes, I have signed up for your course in April).

Concept #1 is easy on the eyes as it is well balanced and simple. The photograghs on #1, really give it a personal touch and friendly feel to the site.
The Internet Marketing Speed report(lead generation) still catches your eye and the photos lead to this element perfectly, without too much distraction.

No. 5 looks the most professional.
No.1 perhaps a little more personal, the pictures may be distracting.

No2 and No3 are okay but very vanilla.

# 4 Opt in is the best

Number 5 of course. WHY? this is SO much more graffic meaning; because the outline is so much darker and catchier the whole concept becomes attractive. I feel like I REALLY WANT to know what the content is?

Where as some of the others seem a bit wishy washy to me and I would want to skim over them.

Here’s my thoughts, just in case you haven’t got enough comments already
If the templates were for different blogs and I could only choose one to read, #1 would definitely be it, without a doubt. It was the first one to jump out at me – love the pics at the top and think that makes a big difference. I see blogs as being more personal than general websites and so it’s good to let your personality shine through.
But I do prefer the graphic and opt-ins on #2 & #3.
Although really… any of them are great.

Hi James,
i personally like Concept 5 but prefer the optin from concept 4 and like personal touch (with ur photos) from concept 1.
Overall Concept 5 shouts out: elegant, professional, interesting (with simple and relaxing colours), eye-catching, spacious (lots of space for banners, widgets, most importantly space for infos).
if you can give lil’ bit personal touch to concept 5 and use optin from concept 4 (not that i dont like optin from concept 5 but concept 4 optin is much interesting), it would b perfect!
hope it helps and good luck in choosing your new skin for your blog!

Hi, to be honest James all of them are rather boring and generic. Numbers 1 and 5 are OK because they show the best design sense. But that’s damning with faint praise. I think you need to loosen up a lot, get more images in there, have a bit of fun with fonts and design, and give more of a visual clue about the value of the content. I’d get a graphic designer in on the act (I’m NOT one btw) and tell them to add some flair and impact – without affecting the readability of course. I know that their are limitations due to file sizes, etc. But I’m sure they can do something a bit more interesting. All the best, John.

Hi James,
I like #1 best but the navigation on #5 is a little better. My suggestion would be a mixture of your “Lifestyle” and the more detail categories like in #5. Remember to balance between graphics and cleanness because it will be useless if its beautiful but harder to load it up.
I’m a frequent reader of your blog and I keep reading it because of your honesty and ideas that keep popping up. You always response on the comments left with your cheerful attitude, sometimes with good tips on the subject. It’s fascinating to read all of the ‘votes.’ I voted early on for #2, and am clearly in the minority! LOL
So please don’t count my vote twice, I just want to express myself more – give reasons for my choice.
I really like the starkness of #2 because James’ content is SO good that I don’t need many pictures or other embellishments. I come back primarily for the frank, clear way he explains and recommends things.
The current blog conveys honesty and integrity to me, which is what James is about. In fact I like the way the blog looks now so much that I have considered buying semilogic software so I can create a similar style for my own blog. I can find things so easily, and there are clever gems kind of tucked in there, almost like Easter eggs in software. My favorite is ‘Don’t click here.’ I resisted clicking on that for a lonnnng time and then finally gave in a few weeks ago. LOL

# 5 is way too much info – I get lost and overwhelmed here.
# 4 is OK, but rather bland.
# 3 Don’t like the menu on top. The header should go there.
# 2 Like this one probably the best. It is easy on the eye, you get to the blog itself quickly.
# 1 Second favorite. Only the left picture would do (I don’t like dogs, rally cars and what are these people waving at?).

Hi James,
you’ve got some good replies hey?
But they all miss the point I think. What are we “in this race” for? We all want to be those things that you are in the photos. (Some of us might start out just wanting to “fire the boss” or earn another little income stream to make life more comfortable; but in the end we ALL want what your internet lifestyle is all about), so the photos in Concept #1 portray exactly what we ALL ultimately want out of internet marketing. THEN you look past that dream and get into business by reading what James has to say!!!

Just thought of another reason why Concept #1 is THE ONE …. in one word “FREEDOM”.
That is what it is all about (internet marketing / affiliate marketing). James’ freedom pictures at the top inspire us to aspire.
Once we’ve seen photo proof of the dream we then get to experience the “always content rich” blogging James so diligently keeps posting for us all to direct us to own our own lifestyle photos for our own blog. And of course; how do we “do” our own blog? Why copy the James Schramko template! It works; it’s tested daily and anything new on the horizon that will grow the audience; James will have it ASAP.

Great point Stephen,
freedom is exactly what IM means to me….
There are a lot of wonderful clues in the comments here about what people want – very nice stuff!

Thanks for the compliment James.
6 minutes.
Thats how long it took James to reply to my post.
How many internet marketers :
1. respond to a blog post in 6 minutes?
2. are therefore as approachable as James?
Answer ==== who knows? who cares? what is important is that this is what “content” means on James Schramko’s site.
This is the answer to “why you (we) like reading this blog”. In the “old days” the stuff James gives you would be called “hot off the press”.

The first one – with the pictures…but me personally would just put up the one autobiographical type picture to give a sense of reality and substance to the site. This is after reading a free ebook from alistair cameron – blogologist. ceya. Peter

Hey James, I feel that Concept 5 has a warmth and richness in the depth of the colour to the start of the page, as well more clearly defining the header and graphics. I would prefer the graphic from Concept 4 without the arrow for the report. The rest of the page appears clean and tidy, and well laid out. Although I do think that your photo will help to market and promote you as an individual as well as being more easily recognised. But would suggest just the photo of yourself without the others distracting. Good luck on the choice. Which-ever you choose will be right!

I like 1,2 and 5 best but I like 1 the most. I like the combo of the color scheme and the pictures. Whichever one you choose, keep the pictures.
Thanks for asking!

Hi James,
I like #1 and #5 best. #2,3 and 4 have that classic clean look but aren’t as engaging and don’t stand out like 1 and 5.
Good luck with your decision!

The majority of replies reveal many prefer concept 4, the red response promt is likely the reason as the site generally is similar to the prior concepts. I reckon concept 5 has the most appeal from a reader’s view. My reasons are as follows:
- page looks more professional
- headlines are ideally placed
- flow of the page is easy to follow
- links are prominent and conveniently located
Why not run concept 4 and concept 5 online at the same time and measure the commercial performance of each. AFter a period of time, shut down the lower performing page.
best of luck.

Hi James,
Long time no talk.
I emailed you several times but I did not hear back.
I like number 5. Glad to see you are moving away from so much white space. I on on your email list so I read about all the products you endorse now weekly. Interesting.
Take care,

I like a combination of 1 3 and 5. I think the dark header looks much better. I like the photos form the top on 1. I think it much better to personalise the blog so we can see who is running it. And the curvy book on 3 is the better logo. Regards, Graham

I’d go with 2#, it from my point of view is the most stylish design. Its got a nice smooth feel to it. I’d also go the pic’s from 1# slighty smaller in the middle of the two main blocks of texts to break it up and lift the page.
Cheers for all the info, been studing up and researching it all. Got a few projects lined up to work on. looking forward to workshop. Peace Guy

CONCEPT 1 – The first blog theme I think is the best. WHY?
Clean lines, easy to read.Fresh! One sidebar column doesn’t cut into the the main writing pane. The sidebar still has enough area for your other stuff.
I like the header graphic as it personalities you and its not all commercial intent. People can relate when they see there’s a real person behind the content.
I like it. Pick me, i love winning prizes, especially its more of your stuff. Pure old James – loving IT Baby!

My thoughts after my initial quick looks were that the 1st and 4th designs were the best but for different reasons. The pictures in the first design were very attractive. The opt in in the fourth design was more likely to get me to opt in. My first thoughts would have selected #1.
I then left the page for a while and a day. My comments were not due until the 26th of March. When I returned today my thoughts had changed. I still liked #1 and #4 but my overall first choice became #5. It was more solid. It made me think the site belonged to an established marketer and solid business. SiInce I presume that I am selling IM products, the added strength of Design #5 (from the visual standpoint) made it my winner!

PINK!! I don’t see any PINK!!!
How am i s’posed to choose one of them when they’re all ‘boy’ colours?? Blue – ARGGHH!!
PINK!! – Make the first one PINK and I’ll be a happy pinker (oh I mean camper – you know that’s what I meant!!)
But if you absolutely MAKE me choose one of them ‘blue’ (eugh) ones – it’d hav’ta be number one!

James!
Hey it’s Jeff from Sydney Australia.
Personally, I think #5 is the strongest. The banner is professional and the graphic, although faint does have some suggestion of speed or light at the end of a dark abyss in space…what I’m trying to say James is that there is some consistency.
The layout is also easier to read and the segmentation by background colour makes it simple to find things quickly a requirement for anyone looking to make the speedy transition you did from part-time internet marketer.
I’m not a fan of the columns at the bottom though…I think they are redundant and one of the reasons I enjoy reading your blog is that you give ‘your loyal followers’ useful content without the fluff. You also help sort through the sea of Gurus to bring us real people who can help. Like Jack Welch used to do…CUT the bottom 10%.
I would also add more of yourself to the blog. That means photos and personality. I saw you at the World Internet Summit and you were helpful, natural and funny. Let that come through a bit more in your writing. People who are coming to your blog for the first time want to know that you’re a real person like them. It’s about connection in addition to your great content.
Finally, the last piece that you’re missing in the categories section is Testimonials. Not on the side but tucked away in a category for those who need it. 3rd party endorsement can be gold and I’ve got the perfect candidate for you….’choose me’.
I’m sure with your expertise & coaching and my intense desire to succeed we’ll have a great story. Plus I’ll be building a strong following for you as my business grows. I’m willing to stick with it until I find success. I’ve flown all the way from Toronto Canada to be here in Sydney, so let me know when I can buy you lunch.
Cheers,
Jeff

Hi James,
I posted some comments the other day but just to summarise what I said in one “post” …..
Concept #1 is THE ONE I would go with because …. in one word it represents “FREEDOM”.
That is what internet marketing / affiliate marketing is all about. That is what IMS is all about.
James’ pictures at the top inspire us to aspire to the type of freedom he enjoys with this lifestyle.
It is the photo proof that “the dream” can become reality.
James gives us his “key” to his IM success through the powerful content he posts on his Blog and he gives us opinion on various related news / software / products so we have that expert knowledge to support and / or reinforce our own view and decisions on the directions we take.
If you have any opinion, query or other type of input into a topic, as long as what you say is a worthwhile contribution you often get James personally responding. (It took him six minutes to reply to my post)!!
James really appreciates that his Blog is a two-way street when it comes to information sharing. That is something that is reflected in his participation and his personal feedback.
When it comes to the crunch, what you get is James being James; that is unique in this industry and it is my opinion that is what James wants to convey; that he is the person whom we ALL “see” through his style of communication.
James

Great comments everyone – the 26th is closing in the US today so we are almost at the end of voting.
I’ll be checking all the replies and announcing a winner after the cutoff.
Good luck and THANK YOU! for helping me so far.
We should end up with something really customized from all of these answers.
Last votes need to go in !!

Hi James!
I stopped to read your blog because I wanted to ask you about some software I believe you use; I’ll contact you on that later.
I like the first layout; the pictures make it personal and interesting; more to catch the eye than print alone. That was my first impression so I’ll go with it.

Hi
Definitely Concept 1. Looks a lot more ‘personal’ and as you know people will always listen to people they can relate to and then trust. Putting up pictures of yourself and what you get up to can certainly let people get to know you a little better and hence relate to you more. Ok, lesson over. 100% Concept 1. (Off to apply the same design to my own blog now.)
All the best
Paul

The winner of the Design Feedback competition is:
Stephen Wharton
He made some great comments – key points about freedom etc and justified his comments well in relation to the design.
From reviewing the overall feedback it seems options 1 and 5 are the most popular. (Although they are quite contrasting designs!)
We definitely will take some elements from each. I think having the photos on this blog is definitely a popular idea and should be integrated into the final design whichever it is to help personalize the site and help people understand what this is all about!
Thank you once again.
The new skin is being designed now and will change one night when you least expect it!

Yay !!!!! thankyou so much, James. Typical though; I’ve been “off-air” all morning, so I just found out that I won !!! Yay … again !! (I think it is Optus’s fault, they did the same the last 2 weekends. Great time to be tweaking their servers or whatever they are doing). Even now it has taken me well over 10 minutes for Outlook to download my emails and let me view them. Yes I’m on Broadband but …
Anyhow, enough whinging …. this is a happy occasion (for me) and I sincerely thank you James for selecting me.
I look forward to seeing your final design and I feel privileged that I contributed to helping it convey your intentions that little bit better.
I know I’m a bit late with this, (I only thought of it after the contest closed), but I realised that one reason I liked your “photo journal” at the top is because they have that bit of Aussie flavour, (see I even spelled that in Aussie English). While I admire ALL internet marketing success stories from all over the World, I think it is great that we have our own IM intelligence growing in leaps and bounds here in Australia and I’m sure your success, (as captured in your photos), relates to people who subscribe to you from other Countries that are just making it into this exciting environment of opportunities ….. the fact that you CAN succeed equally as well as those “super-hero” marketers from the traditional marketing countries such as the US.
So to all those other “bloggers” who helped James with his design, thankyou for the competition and all the interesting comments, and let’s ALL continue to be positive in the thought that we can all be empowered to learn so much in the future from this Blog that we all helped design.
Once again, I’m really greatful to accept your prize James; speak / email soon ??

#5 is my pick – it’s strong, professional and doesn’t like like the free themes that #1 reminds me of. You can have pictures in your posts, footer, sidebar, featured content – heaps of spots but …. I’d like to see another ebook cover.

I know that I’m on the late freight with this but, I’d go with #4 and I would lose the banner. I’m assuming that you probably won’t make any descent money from banner ads, unless you are selling the spaces.
And since you are on the first page of Google for Internet Marketing–I would add an Adsense block–visible to search traffic only–above each post.

James,
I like it. Good to see the new design up. It looks very professional. I see you used my tip about the orange “send my free report” button. Has your testing revealed an increase in opt-ins as a result?
James
13. May, 2009
Thanks Darren,
I like the orange. I think I could increase conversions based on something Michael Dunlop mentioned to me yesterday – I have a few testes to do once I get enought volume through this current test.
So far I have had interesting results…. I’ll reveal them soon.
