Dan Thies can be counted on for a controversial SEO perspective and he is qualified too. He is one half of the SEO Brain Trust, a new project for dedicated Search Engine Optimization enthusiasts and students. The other half is Leslie Rohde.

Internet Marketing all-rounder
Dan Thies is a very capable SEO (Search Engine Optimizer) and PPC (Pay Per Click) marketer. He has a very good business mind honed from being in the market for such a long time. If you can get good at both SEO and PPC then you have a great combination for making money online. I respect him very much and he is the man I ran my latest SEO product past before publishing because he knows a lot about this topic. He has a real business mind. We got to catch up and share some fresh information in this interview.

Keyword Strategy
When looking for the right words to use on the site you should use both the obvious ones AND the ones you dig up later through research. You will find they break into general relevance and specific relevance. (Ignore wishful thinking keywords!). Every page is a marketing channel. Traffic to the site will typically be coming to the site through multiple pages so you want to cater to as many relevant key phrases as possible.

Google Changes
Now with the way Google displays results there is a premium on the top few listings in Google. The top few spots are super sought after. The top three listings carry the greatest click through rates. Google are now trialling triple listings in the search results pages (SERPS). This is especially important since explorer browser uses tabbed browsing and this takes up more space.

CTR (Click Through Rate) Statistics
Statistically (over 800 domains) Dan has gathered private data that shows the click through rates of the top three listings. 50% of the clicks go to the top three results. 60% of those clicks go to the top position. In other words, Dan recommends trying to get number one listings for less competitive terms than lower page one rankings for difficult terms. Google are also inserting shopping listings and video listings in the middle of page one on a frequent basis.

SEO is a resources game
Try to do the on-site stuff at once but work on the link building as quickly as you can to get the site making money. Put the profits back into the site and build the amount of links for every possible relevant phrase. Keep using the resources you have to get top rankings for as many phrases as you can.

ACT
ACT stands for Analytics and Conversion Testing. Working on persuasion elements (paying off on the promise) is a deep science that gets huge yields. This is an area Dan is passionate about and deeply specialized. When doing SEO consider that conversions are a HUGE part of the equation because that is the ultimate purpose for a site.Profit comes from traffic multiplied by conversions.

Strategy and tactics
You need to do a lot to stay ranked because the competitors with the deeper pockets will out spend you in maintaining a top SEO listing. The competition moves down to lower and lower competition keywords. You will need to get savvy with SEO because the game is getting beyond article spinning and made for adsense sites. As time goes on more webmasters will be getting smarter.

Short v long
Sometimes the choice keywords are the short ones however not always. Often the longer tail phrases are more profitable. Revenue per click for pay per click ads show that the highest ranked keywords get more clicks and make more money per click. This means you should be aiming high for PPC and SEO using the RIGHT keyphrases.

Using PPC?
Use exact match because broad match sucks. Recently the live quality score has meant that a lot of exact match phrase match ads no longer display. Dan will be releasing a PPC course to cater for these changes. These are being rolled out in brainstrust. PPC and SEO go very well together. Use SEO to locate the traffic for PPC campaigns. You can buy more profits this way. (I run the Google search query report to tell me what key phrases are bringing me the traffic). Having great SEO with great rankings you can expect to have an excellent quality score. I have long advocated the use of both paid and SEO traffic techniques to get a larger part of the pie.

Amateurs days are numbered
We discussed the state of the market where there are some low quality operators out there jamming out spun content and fully automated blogs. Dan predicts they will get wiped out if they do not pay attention. The only way to play that game is volume related. Sites will get filtered as Google gets smarter and dials up the sensitivity. Dan prefers working on real sites with real content. The hybrid method Dan suggests revolves around having both the money sites and the content sites.

Daily original content
Have an assistant screen topic related RSS feeds and within 30 minutes create 10 pages of content. It is a useful human driven content aggregation system. We discuss the feedwordpress and wp-o-matic plugins for Wordpress. Putting fresh content on each site allows you to have a bigger site than your competitors by using the inbound links that are on each page pointing back to the page you need. The next step is to do this outside your site by building feeder sites that are building links to your but this is even more effective if you build links to your linkwheel sites. The more links you have and the more pages you have the more rank you can expect.

Useful Tools for Internet Marketing
Excel spreadsheets and RSS reader tools are handy for workflow management. Dan uses Delicious bookmarking for his outsource team. He bookmarks anything he wants his team to create links for and they automatically start linking. Using automation for Facebook, Twitter or some similar device is a very smart idea. Always offer readers a Twitter or Facebook sharing button option. (HINT – this blog post has one!)…. We are programmed to help share awesome content when we find it. Do whatever you can to get do to get a large fan base. Facebook fan pages are a good idea (and possibly better than an opt-in list according to Dan).

Great content is easy
Every page that carries good content can give to more links to your sites, enter your market as the bookmarking site for that industry and bookmark your own stuff too. If you can get user generated content you are ahead of the game.

Is PageRank still important?
What matters far more is whether Google is indexing your page and is the cache date up to date. Dan says pagerank is nothing to be obsessing about, he does not even look at it. Google originally intended the PR device as a value ad for the toolbar. It probably helped them to get a lot of tool bars into the browser of the civilian market. Professional SEO’s need not worry about the PR toolbar.

Getting links
If you need links just go to a forum and post. The closer the forum is to topic related matter the better the link. Answering posts in forums gets you links to your site. You can use the search function and find topics that are on theme. You don’t need monthly high PR backlink reports.

Market Samurai
This tool is more for the niche marketer who wants to pick the low hanging SEO fruit. The keywords are researched against some pretty cool indicators like a competition filter. You can find out what will rank well but still get search volume.

Keyword Research
This module is FREE and always has been. It is fast and effective. They are constantly innovating this area and I predict they will be continuing development here in a full scale way.

Track the rank of your site of your site in the search engines over time. Monitor backlinks and pagerank as well.

Verdict
I cannot live without Market Samurai and Keyword Elite 2 is a welcome addition to the resources I use. (I just wish it worked on the mac). I like market Samurai the most of all the tools I use. It is the main tool I need for what I do with PPC/SEO keyword research. If you want to watch advertisements and find adsense ad spots then KE2 is awesome. It will show you where the ads are and the better ones. It will tell you who is building a list and also what you can sell.

Members decide what titles they want and how much they would pay for them. The products are physical multi media products. Workbook, DVD and CD’s etc… Titles are on topics members find of high value. Tim gets experts to help him prepare them.

Affiliates optional

The affiliate program is very tightly run and the association does not require sales from affiliates. Tim does a lot of PPC marketing and direct response advertising in magazine memberships. Once you know your aquisition cost you can measure advertising very effectively.

How to get started

For hardware and software you can spend as much as you like or you can duct tape some software together and make it work. You can use Wordpress and Amember to make it integrate or a professional solution like membergate. The most important thing ever is how you communicate with yoru members. It starts with how you integrate your message into the belief system. This is more important than the way the system is built.

The forum has over 600 posts a day and the members generate an enormous amount of content which is special since people are paying to be there and they care about it. Content is very good quality and members are highly protective of the environment. Once you get momentum your members will protect the environment.

The viral nature of this is huge. This makes people want to promote the site so they can gain access to higher level reports. You may have been swamped recently with hyped up emails and fanatical claims of wonderment about the report. This is why!

Beat The Affiliates!

The really smart thing is that in a few weeks when he releases his new course payperclick Formula 2.0 he will have his list already. The affiliates will not be getting such huge commissions then because Gauher will already own the name and email of every PPC related buyer. Super Clever. This is similar to the $1 per opt-in deal people like Russell Brunson put out there before promoting a bigger product.

Third Party Generated Content

So, Gauher only has to give away free content from what he and third party people have supplied him as payment to build a list. Very clever and worth noting. Sometimes you can learn a lot by observing high level marketers in action.

The Report Itself?

By the way, the report itself is quite good. There is nothing new or clever in there because all of this information (and to be fair, much of it originated from him years ago) has been published in other products since. In fact, parts of it look like a direct cut and paste from his cool cash ezine report. In a way Gauher has been forced to publish this for free since the game has moved on since his first course.

No doubt there will be some serious meat in the actual product. By that time Gauher Chaudhry will know how to find you and tell you about it direct!

We were hanging out last week in Mexico and he is one of the nicest guys in this industry. He really does live the Internet Marketing lifestyle from the profits of the method he is now sharing.

Some people are way off track

Already I have seem some misguided reviews for Google Shadow surface from people who plainly have no clue what it is. I like to bring you the Author Tim Houston direct so you can make up your own mind about what this product is and if the product is right for you. It must be said that Tim and myself are not pushing this to anyone, only you can decide if it is right for you or not. I have been using the software and read the Google Shadow guide already. I love the simplicity of it when combined with the method.

Tim gives up some gold nuggets

He is so generous he has revealed many of the best ideas right here in this free interview. Some of the great points he mentions are that he has experienced the most success from independant programs rather than the mass marketplaces. 80% of his income comes from places OTHER than Clickbank etc… He also reveals some numbers thet he considers essential for success with direct linking. One thing that struck me is the volume of ads he is generating.

Is direct linking dead?

Nope. Tim only ever uses direct linking without landing pages, without link cloaking, without iFraming. He also makes plenty of mistakes like not using negative keywords or doing any keyword research. In some cases he does not even track to keyword level. Huh? Yes, the system Tim uses is SO simple it only requires a starting budget, a calculator, some ACTION and determination.

He changed my mind

When I was lucky enough to discuss direct linking at length with Tim face to face last year I went home and started it myself. This was one of the inspirations for my own PPC success (which I documented in DoubelDigitCTR.com). Tim is able to get ads up for over 300 merchants in one day using his special software plus some outsourcing.

What is Google Shadow?

Google Shadow is a monthly software access where you get to use the special tool Tim has developed over several years. You can fire this up and make as many campaigns for Google, Yahoo and MSN as you like. It autofills and structures campaigns in the perfect variables. You do not need a website because it is hosted for you and updated as changes are added. The other component is the simple ebook.

Don’t expect anything complicated

Tim will tell you he is lazy – I would say he is smart. He has worked out the parito technique (80:20 rule) of only focusing on the things that are working. He figured out how to crack the code and then does it over and over again. There are no landing pages, link building, SEO, list building or review sites required.

The short ebook that comes with Google Shadow does give great tips on bid strategy, keyword tracking, keyword layout and PPC ad types. Tim even explains how you can reduce your debt if you are new and just starting out. You won’t find high detail or techical jargon. The most complicated part is the ROI forumla and that is still very simple.

This is for someone who has a budget to buy some traffic and the perserverance to crank out at LEAST 100 campaigns. Ideally you will launch 1000 camapigns. Cash Bootstrapping by Mark Acutt is a PPC / clickbank affiliate guide just released for struggling affiliate marketers.

The guide covers affiliate marketing from a unique perspective – that of a winner >> loser >> winner.

Mark had an interesting start to affiliate marketing to say the least. He had early success under the mentorship of Andre Chaperon. Andre is a well known and respected affiliate marketer who has kept a low profile after moving from the UK to a warmer climate.

(I learnt about PPC tracking, autoresponder follow-up, video on follow-up landing pages, keyword companion and semioligic blogging software from him many years ago). Andre teaches pre-sells, product selection, tracking and testing, ppc and portfolio diversification. Mark got most of it but forgot to diversify. His campaign went from $300 a day to zero overnight.

For anyone who ever lost money ‘trying’ affiliate marketing….

It hurts. I have had campaigns stop too but I have many running at once. I have not felt the pain Mark has suffered where it all stops overnight. I have had people owe me thousands in unpaid affiliate earnings due to their financial pressure, and people steal campaigns etc… (especially CPA offers). The key to affiliate marketing is to have several methods of income. This is especially if you have to support others and you do this for a living like both Mark and I.

He was totally screwed without warning:

Mark had sold up, moved overseas to start his Internet Marketing lifestyle, and then disaster struck. No income meant he had to quickly re-define his process. What happened next was a great breakthrough. I won’t spoil the story but Mark discovered a formula that is simple, repeatable and easy to follow. He has documented it beautifully in his 74 page bootstrap method.

What is covered and specifically how it can help YOU turn a corner in affiliate marketing

In the Bootstrap method Mark Acutt shows you some maps and blueprints you can follow for PPC affiliate marketing. They show you how to take affiliate seed funds and develop them into multiples. The steps are:
- Research Marketplace
- Product Research
- Keyword Research
- Webhost and Domain setup
- Pre-sell landing page
- Google Adwords Campaign

Readers of my recent DoubleDigitCTR ebook will recognize some significant similarities between the methods I use and the methods Mark uses. The main thing that he specializes in is Clickbank where I tend not to focus on that so much. Mark has really simplified the steps for promoting Clickbank products and made them a dead simple as possible to implement. Throughout the ebook are diagrams and pictures.

Refreshing. He tells you what products NOT to promote.

This is important and not often covered in inormation products. He can teach you a lot from his painful lessons of failure (before his eventual success). The honesty of this product is what I like so much. Many authors are tempted to only mention the winning campaigns, not Mark!

Mark mentions the big three markets to promote and I agree with his reasons behind that. I like his product selection ‘rules’ he has developed because this will help you arrive at a profitable campaign sooner. He also walks you through the five things he looks at on the marketplace data. (And the tool he uses to make this part easier).

Cool – Summary Boxes and pre-sells…

Mark puts summary checklists throughout the report and this makes it easy to see how you are doing before you move on. I think a ten year old could follow this. The element of pre-selling is something that most marketers skip and it where almost all the profits are won or lost before even the first page is built or the first advertisement is written. Mark is a research specialist. I imagine most people have not thought of his brilliant pre-sell page data analysis technique. You can have most of your pre-sales page ideas and content written for you by other people when you go to the site he recommends. He shows you how to turn negative comments into positive persuasion elements.

Keyword Research techniques even the experts will want to see

Mark has very detailed tips for researching keywords using the Google Keyword tool. He also mentions the ‘other’ Google tool that only a few people use. I use it and I know Howie Schwarz uses it too. It tells you search volumes, historic trends, regional hotspots, up and coming data and more…. do you know what it is? (It is not Google Trends!). he also mentions several other sites that give you a great insight into buyers details… (hint).

Hosting, Domains and Pre-sell Landing Pages

This part covers choosing a domain name and hosting. Standard stuff here, all good. The pre-sell is the bit that makes this affiliate marketing technique so strong. I think Andre and Mark are very good at the pre-sell. Andre released a report that sold well and went into great detail about this method. There is an extra pre-sell offer I recommend you take it. You get the great document plus 4 BRILLIANT flow charts and access to a live case study.. This is rare information and most affiliates suck at pre-selling. You need a landing page for a good quality score and to enhance conversions.

The guide does fall short on this….

On showing you how to make a pre-sell page. There are no step-by-step instructions on how to make pages, just what to put on them. I would recommend xsitepro for this. Landing pages are a breeze with this software. Mark sort of skirts right past the technical part however that aside, this guide is very comprehensive.

PPC Campaign Setup and Management

This part is something I am very familiar with and I agree with the information here. The part Mark does very well is timezone analysis. The settings he uses are exactly correct. He also covers tracking conversions very well with detailed solutions outlined. This really is a great ebook.
