Internet Marketing Tips For Facebook Profit (Part Two)

Today we talk to Jennifer Sheahan – aka PPCmom, Social Groove and FbAdsLab.com. These days Jen is a Facebook paid marketing expert. Jen and her husband decided that a corporate career was not the best way forward for a family so she taught herself affiliate marketing.

Paid traffic is awesome

Paid traffic was something she got really good at after creating her first information product (an ebook). Driving more traffic turned into a PPC obsession where she taught herself how to leverage an income from building up the size of the campaign from very small starting budget.

Facebook domination time!

After some hardcore CPA (Cost per action) advertising Jenn settled recently on mastering Facebook since so many people are going on there and it makes perfect sense to specialize on that platform in the mid term.

Maximizing paid advertising spend on Facebook

Facebook has highly targeted advertising opportunities since it draws in around 500,000 million users at any one time. These Facebook users are sharing extremely personalized information making it easy make sales.

Research your product

Make sure you have a product / offer that you can sell. Some products can not be promoted however Jen recommends you start with offers / products that you love such as cameras or video coupons etc… Find products at Amazon, Commission Junction and direct affiliate products.

Direct linking is alive and well on Facebook

Set up a direct link to the merchant to test it and then when you meet advertising costs then you can build out a site on the topic. You can also build a fan page for affiliate products in passion markets.

Getting started advertising on Facebook

Now set up a simple Facebook ad to promote it. Low campaign budget is recommended $10 – 20 per day and a low cost per click. Put the click budget way lower than what Facebook recommend (ignore the warning that the bid is too low). If you do not get any clicks then bump up the clicks to the next bracket.

CPC versus CPM?

Initially CPC (cost per click) is better to test the campaign and then roll out to CPM (cost per thousand impressions) as you know your metrics.

High CTR

The goal is to get at least .30 CTR (click through rate). Whilst the average CTR is .03 Jen thinks a high CTR will lead to success for distribution. Use images every time. Eye contact is important.

Use pictures

Get a picture of a happy smiling women (from the waist up) who is looking you in the eye. If that happy smiling is doing something that relates to the product that can be great for CTR. Amateur photos showing the thing that you are selling work really well.

Add text to images

Get photoshop, Gimp or snagit to add text to the photo. You can put text in images to extend the headline. This really helps when you advertise a fan page. Use a matching font to the headline to give it the appearance of being a longer headline.

Drive Traffic internally a fan Page or externally?

If you have a custom fan page you can send them there. If the fan page is bland or auto-posted then you should send traffic offsite. Engage people or lose them. If you are going to send them to a website you can squeeze emails and you can also do that on Facebook now.

Targeting

Google and Facebook are very different. Before you create your ad you should have a great list of all you competitors and targeted people who your customer will be following. Pay particular attention to the demographics of your market. Ads should target your ideal client is massive detail according to country, state, gender, marital status, school, suburb, fans and job. The insights section of your fan page will tell you who is visiting.

Ninja Targeting Secret

You can bid on competitors names as an interest (if they are there) in the like section and it will show when people visit there. This is seriously like a stalker ad with social proof mice in. Under Jens guidance I tested this for my latest SilverCircle mastermind round and my ad followed people who were interested in me for about 35,000 impressions.

Managing other peoples accounts

Jen manages other peoples accounts because it is much easier for them than setting up Facebook aid advertising from scratch. Putting through many thousands of dollar a day takes a risk tolerance and watchful eye. Some clients use a paid service on a start stop basis so that the market can ramp up promotions.

Pausing Ads versus stopping them

Facebook is a fully manually approved ‘self serve’ pay per click engine. You will get different results for the same ad. The ad inventory draws from different ‘buckets’ and this means that you may get good or bad impressions. You have to test it.

Conversion tracking

If the only traffic is Facebook – you can easily see the results you are getting from Facebook. It is ideal to use a service like Tracking 202 to see which group of people are buying from you. Invest the time to setup a proper tracking campaign and you will get the results.

Time of day tips

The vast majority of traffic for most campaigns is prior to lunch. It seems not every worker is working! Get your campaigns running early in the day for the best results. Remember to test.

The massive changes
Facebook is integrating with Paypal and the Visa network. Now people will be able to do business ON Facebook. this is a huge change because people will no longer need to leave Facebook to do business.

Facebook Places
Facebook Places taking on the ‘Foursquare’ style of locational marketing places local business into the picture. Businesses can now interact with clients and users by using a reward system. Shops and restaurants are exploding with new opportunity and this changes the game for ever.

One Billion LIKE buttons.…
The consequence of this mass roll out of LIKE buttons have caused Facebook to now refer more traffic than Google. Now we refer people to new websites via friends and fan pages rather than just search engines. This is the biggest driver affecting buyer behavior more so than any time before. This is the exact same phenomena that the Link Liberation team were saying changes the traditional SEO game for ever.

Referrals
Having a referral base with endorsed qualified traffic makes this a very interesting time to be using Facebook. Smart web masters can also use the Facebook connect feature to bring Facebook into your site. You can (depending on the Facebook pricey settings) now laser target specific demographics and run highly targeted marketing campaigns.

People will find out
At the click of a button people can share content fast driving endorsed traffic. Google must be wondering what to do about this. The other shift now is from one way marketing to integrated marketing. Modern marketers must integrate marketing channels to create a fan base. Fan pages, email marketing, viral friend referral and peer group influence used together mean you will have a super engaged audience. When we see crowds moving into a product or service area then we see a whole crowd becoming a larger crowd fast. The social movement creates a ripple effect. This is the same as when the cool kids at school create a new trend.

Offsite Integration with facebook
150,000,000 people per month are integrating with off site Facebook integration. When people on your site integrate with a plugin that connects to Facebook you will see faces and that implies social proof. Everyone sees the comments and they are almost always logged into Facebook so it is easy to place comments. When the faces belong to friends – then it is the best scenario possible. Visitors will find it hard to forget about you.

Is it dangerous to include the connect function because of leakage?
Sometimes you might not want to include a like or connect feature if you have a specific conversion path. If you have a blog then you can put a widget on the sidebar. These can also be used on an exit pop. This is a GOOD place to put it. I am adding one to my email subscription confirm page. Be strategic and think about the goal of the page.

Can we be too dependent on Facebook?
Some people build their entire business on the Facebook platform. Given FB’s consistent appetite for change users should be careful. Make sure you know the rules, Drive the traffic into your list and get into the Facebook game as much as you can while it is hot. Once you have a client list you have an asset. Facebook do make changes at times that are difficult to debate. Take the precautions such as having a dual admin for your account. That way if one person gets banned you can still manage the fan page. Participate but know the rules!

More Facebook Marketing Tips
With 5.4 Billion subscribed to fan pages you need to have one. Here are some ideas about what you can do on them:

Give people a reason to belong to your page.
Give them something as an incentive to be a member.
Get a custom landing tab that offers great content.
Give away something really really cool for your community of raving fans.
Solve problems and share other peoples cool content like embedding Youtube videos and royalty free images.
Spend a few weeks sharing great content and then ask them to help share the word.
Every now and then you can make an offer.
Events like teleseminars, webinars and information sessions can really enhance the money making side of the relationships.

Before you get started
Know the rules and the mindset for Facebook marketing. People are not there initially to buy something. You need to add value first then build relationships and offer solutions. Build a landing tab and offer them an incentive. Massive numbers are not the goal. A small focused group of raving fans are a way better and will help you grow your business faster. Keep it targeted and let like attract like.

Locate a bestselling product and target those fans. This targeting is based around buying behavior. You are laser targeting people who have proven that they are already a buyer. Just as a follow up to my original post ‘How To Start An Internet Business‘ I thought you might like to know the results so far. Often Internet marketing experts teach theory however I like to show practical ‘how to’ stuff to prove this works! Page One Ranking On Google Within days As you can see from the screen shot we are already ranked 5th a few days after the last post. The proof is right there. The target phrase we chose was certainly achievable and this process can be done over and over again in any market. Video example My youtube video has now been viewed more than 155 times and it is a perfect example of using the techniques we discussed in the last post about starting an Internet Marketing business. What will happen next? My guess is that with the addition of this post with a similar post title and tags we will get a double indented listing in the search results. The way we do this is ‘beef up’ the blog with related posts. Then we link them together with a text link from one to the other. A great plugin to do this automatically is called SEO Smart links. Check it out if you are using WordPress. By adding particular phrases to your blog you can control internal linking. How YOU can apply this stuff These internet marketing techniques are so easy yet powerful you can use them for affiliate promotions. I used this exact technique to get multiple listings for my John Carlton Simple Writing System Bonus campaign. It seems whenever I go to a BBQ or a friends place I get into a conversation about Internet Marketing. It makes sense since friends know I quit working for a boss a few years ago and I now live at the beach. They want to know how.

In my conversations I usually end up giving them the short version of Fast Web Formula (my own formula for building a 7 figure business from scratch). This is the back of the beer coaster outline:

Step 1 – Mindshift
Prepare to bend your mind and move beyond the standard thinking that so many people suffer. Amazing things can be done online only if you accept that there are different rules (especially when it comes to leverage). Many office workers are conditioned into 9-5 thinking. You HAVE to break out of that mindset to make it online.

Step 2 – Plan
Have a strategy. Most people approach internet marketing with a product in mind and then try and figure out how to sell it. Wait, there is a better way! Often nobody is interested. I prefer to start with the audience in mind. The starving crowd we often hear about in marketing speak. Usually I suggest the basic strategy of being an affiliate (I liken this to being a commission only sales person). As an affiliate we still build a list and create an authority blog where we will eventually sell our own products as well.

Step 3 – Research
Time to do some keyword research. The easiest way to do this is use Market Samurai. If not, the Google keyword tool will suffice. We look for search terms that have some traffic, advertiser competition and less than say 60,000 results in ‘quotes’ in the search listing. In this example I ended up finding the key phrase: ‘How to start an internet business‘ from my seed search.

This should be a buying phrase with commercial intent. Words like ‘how to’ or ‘buy’ are always useful! Next we type that into Google and pull the keyword lists from the top few ranked sites using the alexa ‘search analytics’ data. We will use these phrases in our content and as tags for blog posts and videos to help Google understand what our site is all about.

Step 4 – Money Link
Now we join a program where we can sell an offer relating to the keyword. We search for our keyword + affiliate. Often we will find a clickbank product or a CPA (cost per action) offer from somewhere like Neverblue. There are also some cool offers at CJ.com. Once we have signed up for an offer we now read the sales page and get into the mind of the buyer. Note if you already have a site that makes money you can use this technique to get yourself more traffic and links by pointing the campaign to your own site.

Step 5 – Content
Now we create or buy some content to use as a lead magnet. Ideally this can be a video (you can transcribe it later into a PDF report, MP3 podcast and blog post). This means we can use a youtube strategy of posting video content with a view to attracting clicks to a URL (web site address) displayed as a watermark in the video and in the description link next to the video. If we have no content we can rent or buy a youtube video by contacting the owner of an already existing video. If you are creating a video it can be a slideshow made with powerpoint. You can film yourself with a digital camera set to movie mode. Alternatively use screenflow or camtasia software just to make a screen video of you talking on the sales offer page whilst scrolling. Step 6 – Traffic
Time to get some traffic. We post our video and place links in the description to either the offer directly or your own blog. For affiliate links I suggest you use a re-directed domain. Buy a domain from namecheap and then re-direct it to the affiliate link using the built in free feature.

Later when you scale up you should host the re-directed domain on your own server so you can track traffic.

If you are building a blog then get a nice keyword domain or brandable domain and build a wordpress blog on it using the C Panel wizard called Fantastico. There are a number of free tutorials on youtube for building a wordpress blog. Make sure you use the right SEO permalink structure of /%category%/%postname%/ and use six tags per post with keywords (that you got from Alexa).

Step 7 – Conversions
Now we need to get that click to the offer and also build our list. It will increase conversions if we offer a bonus with purchase. If we do that we can also collect an email address for each buyer. The blog should have a name capture with a useful free report or similar. Use aweber or similar to get the names and send out bonuses. Once you have some clients (even ten) send them to a survey from Survey Monkey and ask them what else they buy / would like to buy and make it for them! The goal of course is to build a huge qualified list so that you can make money any time you need it just by sending out targeted valuable offers.

More tips
Once you have this process in play you will be ready to get “its not about the website“. Be sure to get some links to your content using bookmarking, linkvana and other methods such as podcast directories and article distribution.
